Newton-le-Willows situated mid way between Liverpool and Manchester, has since the 19th century been very closely linked to the railway industry with the Vulcan Foundry on its doorstep, the developer of one of the world’s foremost locomotive manufacturers. The railway station is one of the oldest railway stations in existence, and is now undergoing a major transformation, which will provide passengers with improved facilities, easier access and better links between regional and national transport.
The scheme is supported by Growth Deal funding to Merseytravel, with Network Rail contributing £229m, and the Liverpool City Region contributing £111m.
The scheme will include extended parking for 440 vehicles including blue badge and wider spaces, and include a Rail-Bus Interchange and a taxi drop-off-point. The existing car park will form part of the new bus interchange with the new entrance situated on the south side with a booking hall and improved access to facilities via new lifts, subway and stairs. Also provided will be new toilet facilities and improved passenger waiting areas with step free access to the platforms.
It is envisaged there will be some changes made to the scheduled timetable on the line over the next few years, as the work on the Northern Hub electrification project is completed. Ultimately, this will lead to greater capacity on services and faster journey times.
The current aim is for the works to be completed and the new facilities to be operational by March 2018.
